AI+ SME Owners

Empower Your Business for the Post-AI Era

AI adoption sequenced for the business you actually run.

Your staff are already using AI. Some is working; most is scattered and ungoverned. The real risk isn't AI being used — it's the wrong tools being used with the wrong data without you knowing. This book gives SME owners the FIRST Framework for sequenced adoption, the SCALE scorecard for AI investment decisions, and a 90-day action plan. Written by engineers who build production AI systems — for owners who know their business is too important to experiment with.

You'll build
  • The Owner-Manager's Strategic Toolkit — five thinking moves for the decisions only you can make
  • The FIRST Framework — Foundation, Impact, Replicate, Scale, Transform — the five-stage sequencer for SME AI adoption, with SCALE investment evaluation built in
  • An AI Opportunity Shortlist for your business — prioritised by impact and your real capacity, not aspirational ambition
  • A proportionate governance framework — AI policy, data safety, team guidelines built for 5–250 employees
  • A 90-day plan for owners of established SMEs across professional services, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, B2B, and trades
Who this is for

Owner-managers of established SMEs — revenue-generating businesses with 5–250 employees. They might run a 30-person professional services practice (an accountancy firm, a legal partnership, a management consultancy), a regional manufacturing company with 80 staff, a chain of retail outlets or hospitality venues, a B2B services or logistics operation, or a specialist trades or engineering firm. They have been running the business for several years. They are past survival mode — they have customers, staff, processes, and overheads. They manage a management layer (a head of sales, an operations manager, an office manager) rather than every individual directly. They hold P&L accountability. They are the final decision-maker on commercial, strategic, and operational questions.

Also for:Managing directors or general managers of SME subsidiaries or franchises with full local accountability; senior family-business heirs taking over leadership of an established business; operations directors or commercial directors who effectively co-run an SME alongside the owner.

You’ll be able to
  • Apply the FIRST Framework to sequence AI adoption across their business — prioritising by impact and resource constraints across five stages: Foundation, Impact, Replicate, Scale, Transform
  • Apply the PRISM Prompting Framework to at least six SME owner tasks spanning commercial, operational, people, and financial domains — each with measurable quality improvement
  • Evaluate AI investment proposals using the AI Investment Scorecard (SCALE) with SME-specific criteria, making defensible go/no-go decisions
  • Map business operations across the AI Opportunity Matrix to produce a prioritised AI Opportunity Shortlist for their specific business
  • Establish a proportionate AI governance framework — AI policy, data safety protocols, and team guidelines — appropriate to an SME with 5–250 employees
  • Apply five named thinking moves from the Owner-Manager's Strategic Toolkit — Pre-Mortem, Devil's Advocate, Steel-Man, Stakeholder Scan, and Growth Bet Stress-Test — to high-stakes business decisions using AI as always-available structured challenge
